
The 9-month Foundation Course offers beginning to intermediate students an in-depth, comprehensive education in western herbal practice from some of the most sought after herbal instructors in the country. Students receive extensive training on the properties, actions, uses, and energetic qualities of the most commonly used herbs in Western Herbalism. In addition the curriculum includes coursework in medicinal and toxic plant identification, introductory clinical skills (such as reading the body, constitutional assessment, and tongue and pulse evaluation), ethical wild-harvesting, medicine making, herbal history, and traditional plant spirit medicine. The classes consist of a balance of lecture, discussion, multimedia presentations, small-group clinical skills practice, fieldwork, interactive case taking and case studies, plant tastings, and plant attunements. The curriculum is based on a holistic, vitalist, energetic, and experiential approach to herbal studies.
The Advanced Herbal Practitioner Course offers students a unique opportunity to study with some of western herbalism’s leading instructors. In the 9-month course students are trained in herbal therapeutics for complex presentations, with an emphasis on understanding organ system imbalances, differential use of plant remedies based on energetics, and a review of relevant aspects of anatomy and physiology. In addition to herbal therapeutics, class topics include: physical assessment including tongue and pulse evaluation and reading the body, northwest materia medica, clinical interviewing, clinical nutrition, herbal formulation, and opening and maintaining an herbal practice. Classes consist of a balance of lecture, discussion, small group practice, fieldwork, case studies, experiential plant assessments, and some materia medica from other traditions including Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. The curriculum is based on a holistic, vitalist, energetic, and experiential approach to herbal studies.
For advanced students. This course is a supervised clinical practicum in which students will receive hands-on clinical experience in an herbal clinic setting. Pre-requisite advanced course and permission from faculty.
